I'm just back from two back-to-back conferences...It's amazing how different the world can look when you have the opportunity to see the world anew.
If you are feeling stifled or stuck in how you are thinking about your green career options, I encourage you to find a way to expand your world view. A conference, a new book, a talk, a radio show. With the current, never-ending flow of information, you don't have to look far to find opportunities to gain a new perspective of your options.

Tip of the Week: Wake Up! The Time for Sustainability is Now!
I love walking away from a multi-day conference with new insights I didn't even know I was looking for!
It was the last break out session of the AASHE (Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education) conference. After two very full days of keynotes, panels, and discussions, I wasn't sure I could fit one more piece of information into my head! Yet the title for the session was intriguing.
"Is It Time for a Revolution?"
As I walked in the room, several hundred people were watching a welcome message from Bill McKibben. The fact that he took time to record a message just for this group got my attention! I was curious to see what would transpire.

To give you a little context, Bill McKibben is the founder of 350.org and the author of a number of books about nature and global climate change:
"350.org is an international campaign that's building a movement to unite the world around solutions to the climate crisis--the solutions that science and justice demand.
Our mission is to inspire the world to rise to the challenge of the climate crisis--to create a new sense of urgency and of possibility for our planet.
Our focus is on the number 350--as in parts per million CO2. If we can't get below that, scientists say, the damage we're already seeing from global warming will continue and accelerate. But 350 is more than a number--it's a symbol of where we need to head as a planet."
On 10-10-10, 350.org had an international work day that brought people together through 7347 events in 188 countries around the world. Last year they had a similar action day to raise awareness of the number "350."

Next up the attendees, a diverse mix of faculty, staff, administrators, students, and professionals, watched a short video entitled "Four Years. Go.". The bottom line:
"FOUR YEARS. GO. is a campaign to shift the current trends of humanity by 2014 so that we will be headed on a path toward an environmentally sustainable, socially just, and spiritually fulfilling future on this planet.
What is missing is a collective sense of possibility and the political and popular will to act--urgently, globally, collaboratively.
There is a limited window of opportunity, maybe just four years, to execute our great turning; four years for people to get motivated and involved; four years to apply the solutions we already know; four years that can determine the quality of life on this planet for the next 1,000; four years to get it right. And we need to start now, on a worldwide scale.
Conventional wisdom, however, is that you can't expect humanity to wake up until it is shocked into action by some global catastrophe or massively painful systemic breakdown. But by the time that happens it will almost certainly be too late.
FOUR YEARS. GO. is a campaign for humanity to take its future into its own hands, to wake itself up, and to motivate itself into action. And to do it now."

Finding New Solutions
As I moved into they second conference of the week, the urgency of situation stuck with me.
To make significant changes in how we are addressing the essential issues of our time, we must move beyond problem solving with a series of iterative solutions.
Somehow we must, as Einstein noted, see the situation from an entirely new perspective. It's only through a new lens that we'll be able to perceive of the changes that will open up true pathways to a new future.

A New Lens
What experience or circumstance will shift our perspective as individuals or as a collective?
I've often wondered how our ideas, options, and decisions might change if we had a deeper connection to the Natural World and the Planet, both individually and collectively.
- How might our views change?
- Would we see problems in a different light?
- What new solutions would be born of this new perspective?
I don't know the answers to these questions at the moment, but as a result of my weekend workshop I'm definitely feeling called to explore them.
Actions You Can Take
If you are on the verge of a new idea or already exploring new directions for yourself, follow your calling. Take it one step at a time to follow the thread of your idea. Discover where it takes you. Don't wait for the perfect time...start now!
