If any these statements sound like you, you'll find the guidance you need to find your green career.

  • I know I want a green career, but I have no idea what I want to do.
  • I have a green career idea, but I don't know what steps to take to reach my goal.
  • I've been scanning job boards, networking and doing informational interviews, but I still don't know what green career will be best for me.
  • I want to get some green education, but I don't know where to go.
  • I want to start a green business or green an existing business.
  • I know I need to gain more green work experience before I'll be a viable job candidate.

Can I find a green career on my own?

Can you? Probably.

Should you? It depends.

It depends on how much time you have, whether you are a self-starter who is comfortable walking into the unknown, how adept you are at finding the resources you need, and how you handle the times you feel stuck in your search.

When you consider going it alone, you also need to consider the tradeoffs.

  • If you take longer to figure out your target career, it will take you longer to get into the career that reflects your passions and interests.
  • If your time is limited, do you want to spend your time moving your career search forward? Then you'll want to tap into the collection of resources we've spend months pulling together for our members.

How long does it take to find a green career?

Although it's hard to predict how long a career change will take, the answer typically depends on a number of factors.

  • How committed are you to your quest for a green career?
  • How much time and energy can you devote to your search?
  • What kind of industry or profession are you interested in? Where are they in terms of being ready to hire people with the skills you have. Green industries are maturing at different rates due to funding, policies, technology, and regulation. As industries mature, their hiring patterns change.
  • How plugged in are you to the green network in your area and in your profession?
  • How comfortable/secure do you feel in your current job?
  • What other life events are going to influence your ability to move quickly on your desire to have a green career?
  • How closely aligned are you to your current profession and your target profession?

Keeping all of these factors in mind, we've seen people find a new position within a matter of weeks and we've seen people choreograph a gradual career change over a period of several years.

In each case, the person is making the decisions they need to make to find the balance between their passions and their responsibilities. A career change that takes more than a year can actually be a good thing. If you use the time wisely, you can gain solid green experience, build your network, learn about your new industry, and gain some green education.

Why was Green Career Central founded?

Our founder has helped people change careers for over seventeen years. In the last few years she's seen more and more people who wanted to work for a sustainable company that is making a difference.

She soon realized that most of these clients were having a hard time finding online resources to help them reach their goal. They spent so much time searching for resources they had little time to move their search forward.

From our experience working with clients going through career change, we know that in order to be successful in your career change you need internal clarity about your target green career, job boards, networking contacts, and informational interviews are not going to give you the results you want. Green Career Central can provide you with the resources to achieve this success.

Green Career Central was founded to:

  • Help people identify and articulate the green niche that combines their passions, interests, talents and experience.
  • Give people a step-by-step plan to reach their goal.
  • Bring key green resources together in one place so they are easy to access and use.

What's the background of the founder of Green Career Central?

Carol McClelland, PhD has been helping thousands of people change careers since 1991. Since then she's taught a Career Self-Assessment course at San Jose State University, written Changing Career For Dummies and Your Dream Career For Dummies, and created an online career change program called the Career Clarity Program. She has trained other professionals to use her career change programs with their clients. The What's Your Green Niche eBook is the "green" version of a portion of her Career Clarity Program.

For more information, read Carol's bio.

Who writes the content for Green Career Central?

Carol McClelland, PhD: Draws on seventeen years of career discovery consulting and her six career related books and programs to write all of the Green Career Tip of the Week articles as well as articles about the process of finding your green career. In addition Carol reviews and edits all other articles that are posted to the site.

Our Career/Business Experts: Write articles about their area of expertise whether it's resume writing, interviewing, research techniques, branding, or creating a business plan. If an expert has written the article, you'll see their name in the byline.

Researcher and Interns: We have a senior researcher and several interns researching various green career resources and writing summaries of what they find. These resources may be industry profiles, job boards, or schools. All summaries are reviewed by Carol McClelland, the founder and managing editor, before they are posted.
