Tip of the Week: The Gifts of Focus: Simplifying Your Green Career Search
Four issues stop green career seekers in their tracks.
- Unsure of your green career direction
- Confused about what to do next
- Overwhelmed by how much information there is to take in
- Limited time horizon
In many ways these issues are all related. When you know your target green career and you know what steps to take, then you'll be better able to filter through the vast array of resources more quickly to find the information you need to make progress with your green career. It's your focus that's going to make a world of difference in your green career journey. With clarity you'll have a better sense of how and where to direct your attention, energy, and actions. How Your Focus Ripples Through Your Green Career Journey Focusing your green niche - with a clear career direction, you have a rudder to steer your way forward. You'll know what fits your direction and what is outside the parameters of your quest. Although this may seem like a subtle benefit, you'll be amazed at how much time it saves to know what is and isn't part of your future. Focusing your research - To research the entire green/clean/sustainable economy to find your green career direction is a crazy undertaking! There is too much going on in too many industries and sectors to use a research strategy to identify your general career direction. Starting with your career focus, you'll rein in the scope of your research project. This strategy will save you time and help you make your research time more effective and efficient. Focusing your networking - Networking with a vague statement as your introduction may help you gather contacts for future reference, but it won't help you stimulate targeted leads to resources and job leads that match your interests. An introduction that communicates your career direction and your value is the key to leveraging your network contacts knowledge, connections, and insights about your target industry. Focusing your training - The green training options rival the number of places you can research your green industry. Talk about overwhelm and confusion! Although it's tempting to take a training program because it's in front of you and will green up your resume, be sure you know that the training will help you achieve your green career goal. Full training programs and degree program are too expensive and too costly to take a chance that it will align with your goals. Choose your training programs because they enhance your skills and knowledge for the green job you want. Focusing your job search - As you begin your job search, it's tempting to throw out a wide net--hoping to capture as many leads as possible. Unfortunately, a wide net means your contacts have a vague sense of what you want. As a result, the leads you receive will be equally general. That's no way to get the job! With a clear statement about the kind of job you want, you'll get much better results from your networking efforts. If you have a couple of directions you want to pursue, you must be clear about how you communicate the options so your contacts will know which leads to pass your way. A Special Note: You may be worried that if you focus your search, you'll miss the career you are meant to have. Not to worry. Your focus may actually point you toward a career you don't even know exists yet. If you are meant to have a career in another industry or sector, it's likely you'll feel the pull that your chosen focus isn't quite right. Trust your inner sense. If you listen to it and go toward what intrigues you...and turn away from that which repels you.
