Tip of the Week: The Fastest Path to Your Green Career
You've decided you want to find a way to work in the green / clean / sustainable economy. The next step is to figure out how you are going to make that happen. Rather than thinking of your journey as one event, focus on the three phases that make up your journey. Phase 1: Get Clear The first key to speeding up your journey to your green career is pinpointing your green career focus early on. When you know what you think you want, you have a clear starting point for your research in Phase 2. You know how to introduce yourself to networking contacts. You know which events are likely to pay off for you. You can research your best education options.
Bottom line: If you are confused about your career options or if you have a general goal to work in a particular industry, you are going to struggle in Phase 2 as you prepare for your active search.
Phase 2: Prepare The second key to moving toward your green career is to take some time to figure out how to articulate your career goal and your value. Before you launch your job search you need to know several things:
- How your target green industry/function works
- Where your skills are of most value to employers
- How to describe your value in conversations and in writing
Taking the time to build a compelling introduction, develop a powerful bio/profile, and crafting a persuasive resume that are based on solid knowledge about your industry/function will pay off in numerous ways.
Bottom line: I know you want to leap right into an active job search, but if you aren't properly and effectively prepared for conversations with key contacts and hiring managers, think of the impression you are leaving them with. It's not the best plan is it?
Phase 3: Launch Your Search The third key to landing your green job is to approach your job search as you would an important project. There are two parts to activating your job search:
- Refine the specifics of your target job based on the research you've done in Phase 2.
- Decide on the tactics you are going to use to move your job search forward systematically.
Bottom line: Getting the job depends on persistently following clues and opportunities. It's not likely to happen overnight. Surround yourself with support systems so you keep moving toward the results you want to achieve.
Actions You Can Take What phase of the green career journey are you in? What's keeping you from moving to the next phase? By understanding exactly where you are in the process you can determine where to spend your time. Moving through each of these phases, in order, will give you the most effective results.
