Hi, I'm Carol McClelland, PhD, author of Green Careers For Dummies and Founder of Green Career Central. For much of my career I've focused on helping people identify their niche - the career that expresses and leverages their skills, passions, and interests. Three Mistakes Green Job Seekers Make
When Searching for Job Leads
 
  You are in the midst of your job search. You are making some progress, bit by bit. You receive a promising lead here and there, but try as you might, you don't seem to be gaining any momentum! 

We know how frustrating it is to invest the time, energy, and dedication to your job search and then have nothing much to show for your efforts. You can't very well give up, but at times you sure would like to throw in the towel.

Bottom line: You need to figure out what's standing in the way of you getting a job. The sooner the better!!

The good news is that you are focusing on sources of green jobs that are likely to reflect your values and interests. And it's true you may get lucky and find a job listing that is a perfect fit for your skills, talents, and interests. If you do find that perfect job list, definitely apply!

Unfortunately, most people scanning the job boards aren't looking for a listing that's a perfect fit. They are looking for a job that's good enough.

If you find yourself saying anything resembling the following statements, you are on a slippery slope.
  • “I could do that.”
  • “I wouldn't mind doing that job.”
  • “That wouldn't be so bad.”
You are settling. You've abandoned your unique passions, experience, and expertise. In the process, you end up in the middle of the heap, competing with hundreds of other people who are also scanning job boards to find a job. It's no wonder you aren't getting much, if any, response from surfing green job boards.

“When companies don't have any openings,
 I take them off my target list.”

This is a common strategy. After all, you are looking for a job now. It seems to make sense that you only want to invest your time on companies with a current job opening.

Just because a company doesn't have an opening today doesn't mean they never will! Life happens in any company – people announce their retirement, go on leave for health reasons, take maternity leave, and relocate to take care of an ailing parent. All of these life changes create openings and opportunities within the company. Even professional changes happen – promotions, lateral moves, transfers – that create possibilities for you!

Targeting companies that match your values, interests, and passions, whether they have a current opening or not, puts you in a prime position to act quickly when a viable opportunity opens up.

Seems like the obvious solution, doesn't it. You are in need of a job, so you ask for what you want.

Unfortunately, asking people directly about job openings has a way of shutting the conversation down right when you want to build an ongoing relationship with that contact.

Think of it from your contacts' point of view. They are more than happy to talk about their profession, the industry, and future trends as they see them. But the minute it becomes clear you are looking for a job right now, they feel pressured to come up with some way to help you. 

In all likelihood, the next time you reach out to them they'll remember their discomfort. They'll side step meeting with you. They'll avoid your phone calls. They'll somehow miss seeing your emails and LinkedIn queries.

What are you to do? Although it seems counter-intuitive, the best thing to do is NOT ask about job leads. That's right! Instead, focus on collecting information and building ongoing relationships that provide you with great referrals for months and years to come.
