Tip of the Week: Sustainability Greenprint: An Indispensable Handbook for Those Interested in Sustainability

Why This Resource Caught My Eye
Last September I attended the International Society of Sustainability Professionals conference, an inspiring, energizing, informative event. While on an ISSP-sponsored tour of Portland, I met David Hendrickson, a professional planner with a PhD in sustainability and a 25 year background in sustainable community development.
Throughout the tour, David asked some very interesting questions of the presenters. I immediately noted his grasp of the complexities inherent in this field shaped by multiple disciplines and organizations around the world.
Several months after the conference, David contacted me to let me know he was working on the Sustainability Greenprint. When I reviewed a draft to offer feedback and suggestions I was impressed by the clear, crisp descriptions of a wide variety of sustainability topics, organized in a thoughtful, meaningful way with valuable links to follow up information for each topic.

Who Will Benefit from This Resource

Anyone who is interested in the field of sustainability will benefit from reading this handbook. Although I've been reading about and making sense of the green / sustainable economy for the last five years, I learned a few new concepts while reading this handbook. Please take a look at this resource if you are:
  • A student learning about sustainability in a graduate program or undergraduate program.
  • An employees or job seeker who is new to sustainability.
  • A sustainability professional who has been working on sustainable development issues for years
  • A career professional who works with students or clients interested in sustainability careers.
The content will be invaluable as you make sense of the overall concepts of sustainability in context, you prepare for networking conversations or interviews, you settle into your new role within a company that's focused on sustainability, or you begin looking at your next move in your career path.

what this thing called a Virtual Retreat actually is!
  • You'll participate from home on a Saturday. Most likely Feb 18th or 25th - I'll poll those who reply below to find the best day. We'll meet from 10 am Pacific - 2 pm Pacific / 1 pm - 5 pm Eastern.

  • I'm still investigating the delivery options. I'm hoping to use online live streaming video platform that will allow you to see me live throughout the retreat. Much more interactive than a teleclass or a Powerpoint-driven webinar, I promise! Stay tuned for details!

  • We'll meet at the top of the hour for 20-30 minutes where I'll introduce the key topic for that hour.

  • Then you'll work on your own, during the retreat, to explore the key topic for yourself. In addition to what we've discussed, you'll have worksheets that walk you through additional prompts, activities, and support to find new insights you haven't uncovered before.

  • When we come back at the top of the hour, you'll have a chance to share your discoveries, ask questions, and learn from others through the live chat before we turn to the next topic.
