Tip of the Week: Job Search Success Story: Five Key Takeaways from a New Hire
As you no doubt know, the current job market is very competitive. Employers are literally swamped with resumes. So how do you catch their attention? Last week a former client contacted me to let me know he'd landed a green job. Last fall, while completing his Sustainable MBA program, he completed our one-month Find Your Green Focus course. In our email exchange he shared some observations from his job search.
"There's no science to job searching - it's not black and white - it's filled with nuances that differ by personality type, past experience, and future goals. What worked for me might not work for others."
1) Be clear about the kind of job you want when you talk with your networking contacts. The clearer you are about your focus, the clearer they will be about what referrals to send your way. Eventually you'll modify your description to align with the positions potential employers are trying to fill. 2) Create a tight, compelling career story that demonstrates your value to the employer. Your story will be told in several forms - your resume, your LinkedIn profile, how you describe yourself in conversation, and a personal web site that highlights your expertise. 3) Only apply for positions that match your target goal and your experience. That said, be aware that job descriptions are over-inflated right now (in an effort to reduce the number of resumes companies are receiving). If you can make a compelling case that you are a good fit for the job, apply and be ready to highlight your capabilities in your interview. 4) Build a thriving network with people who are well connected within your industry and your community. Each time you apply for a job or target a company, do your best to get a personal referral to the hiring manager. Managers are relying more and more on personal referrals to find the gems in the pile of resumes that get sent in for every position.
5) Be ready to interview at all times. You never know when you'll get called for a phone interview or an in person interview. Research the company, know how to describe your value, be ready with strong stories to demonstrate your ability to perform their job well.
The most important thing to remember is that it's up to you to be proactive in your job search. The more you engage with your network, your desired industry, and your goal, the more visible and magnetic you'll become. Results of His Job Search Using the strategies described above, our client experienced these results:
- He was asked to interview for all of the jobs he applied to except one.
- He pulled out of the running for several positions because they weren't a good fit for him.
- He ended up with three job offers. He turned down one because they asked him to relocate unexpectedly.
- He accepted a job with Google's Green Team.
Keep at it and the referrals, opportunities, and openings you learn about will build and develop into offers!
