Tip of the Week: Green Job Spider: Our Favorite Source for Green Job Listings
On March 3rd 2010, our colleague Chris Russell launched an innovative green jobs search engine called the Green Job Spider.
Don't think of it as your typical job board that has a mish mash of job.
Think of it as a highly-focused search engine that goes out every night to index all the green jobs that have shown up on sites that have been pre-approved as reliable sources for green jobs.
In just 6 months, Green Job Spider has gone from zero to 8138 green jobs!
Although the job listings don't yet cover all of the sectors on our Green Economy Map, the listings covering quite a number of the bases. (And...remember, Green Job Spider can't pick up jobs that aren't there...or that aren't clearly identified with a key word.)
On the home page today I found direct links to these sectors and categories:
- Renewable Energy Jobs - solar, wind, biofuel, ethanol, geothermal
- Green Building Jobs - building, weatherization, lighting, green construction
- Environmental Jobs - conservation, environment
- Waste Jobs - recycling, wastewater
- Scientific and Engineering Jobs
- Power Jobs - smart grid, fuel cell
- Green Business Jobs - green finance, green marketing, green sales, sustainability
- Non-profit Jobs, entry level jobs, and internships
There's also a way to pull up job listings for twelve key US cities (Atlanta, Austin, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, New York City, Philadelphia, Phoenix, San Diego, San Francisco, Seattle) as well as every US State.
If you want to dig in deeper, you can search for jobs by selecting from the criteria in the search windows.
How You Can Make the Most of Green Job Spider
- Browse - Use the jobs listed on Green Job Spider as a research tool to discover more about how your target industry works and the kinds of companies and jobs that are available.
- Targeted Search - If you know what you are looking for, do a search and then set up a job alert to get notified when a position matching your requirements is listed.
- Get Lucky - It's possible you could discover THE job for you.
Time for a Reality Check
So...let's assume you go to Green Job Spider right now and find a job that is a perfect fit for you.
- Will you recognize it when you see it? Do you know enough about what you want to spot a job as THE one?
- Do you know how to respond to the job listing in a way that effectively communicates your value and how you want to contribute to the new emerging economy?
- Do you know how to position yourself in a way that allows you to outshine others to land the position?
The clearer you are about where your skills fit in the green economy, the more you'll be able to leverage the on-target job listings you find and job referrals you receive from your network.
