Tip of the Week: Claim Your Green Career in 2011

In the final business days of 2010, several key developments occurred that will shape the green/clean/sustainable economy of 2011 and beyond.

  • December 16, 2010: President Obama signed an extension to the Bush tax cuts. In the process, his signature gave a big 2011 boost to solar and wind companies by extending grants that were set to expire on Dec 31, 2010. In addition, tax credits for those who commute via public transportation and alternative fuels.
  • December 16, 2010: California Air Resources Board passed a key part of California's 2006 climate law,  AB32, that sets up financial incentives to encourage power plant owners (and eventually refineries, fuel distributors, and oil companies) to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
  • December 23, 2010: The EPA announced it will regulate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions for carbon-based power plants and refineries under the auspices of the Clean Air Act.

Some of these developments will have an immediate impact on green jobs and industries while other announcements indicate the direction for the future.

What is Your Career Intention in 2011?

Are you hoping to contribute to the evolving green economy?
Do you want to make a difference?
Do you dream of being a sustainability innovator?

If so, you may be wrestling with three questions:

1) Is it really possible to get a green job?

First, don't rely on mainstream media to evaluate what's happening and what's possible.

Instead, start reading triple bottom line blogs that address developments in the business world and specific industries. These blogs often have multiple announcements every day!

As you read the blog posts, consider that every sustainable project, policy, regulation, invention, system and innovation is developed and implemented by someone with a green career.

2) How do I figure out where I can work in the green/clean/sustainable economy?

Answering this question is a blend of several factors
  • Take some time to explore the industries that make up the green economy. Broadening your view of the green economy is likely to expand your options.
  • Reflect on your passions and interests within the sustainable space. Knowing how you want to contribute to the environment and the sustainable world helps you focus your efforts.
  • Evaluate your skills, experience, and education. Determining what you bring to a company or project helps you focus on your value to a potential employer.
  • Assess your local green economy. Understanding how green/clean/sustainable industries are evolving in your region guides you to identifying your best options.

3) How do I land a job in the green/clean/sustainable economy?

Turning your passion into a green job is a journey with several steps. Spending time preparing yourself for the position and engaging in your target green industry are the best way to hear about job openings that match your needs.

The best way to approach this process is to divide the journey into two parts.
  • A research and development phase where you dedicate your efforts to understanding your target green function and industry.
  • An active job search phase where your focus on learning more about your target green companies.

One key to reaching your goal of having a green career is to do these steps in the right order. What you learn in the first phases helps you as you move into the next phase.
