Tip of the Week: CNN Heroes: Inspirational Role Models for Your Green Career
Did you watch the CNN Heroes presentation over the weekend? After receiving 10,000 nominations from more than 100 countries, the top ten CNN Heroes were profiled at the award event. Additional heroes are profiled online. No big surprise, I was especially intrigued by the heroes who focus their efforts on environmental / green efforts.
- One of the Top Ten Heroes celebrated on the TV special was Evans Wadongo. A 23 year old Kenyan has invented a solar-powered LED lantern to bring light to rural villagers. Gone are the kerosene lanterns that are expensive to operate and barely provide enough light to study by. Evans named his invention, MwangaBora -- Swahili for "good light." He's already delivered 10,000 lanterns at no cost. Families are able to divert money that used to pay for kerosene to other needs. Children have a much better chance of excelling in school with adequate lighting. Currently the cost of each lantern ($20) is covered by donations. Each lantern is made from pieces of discarded solar panels and scrap metal. As the lanterns wear out, Evans intends to repair and recycle them.

- Another CNN Heroes is Gary Oppenheimer from West Milford, NJ. After a bountiful garden harvest in 2007, Gary delivered his excess vegetables to a local food pantry. The person who received his donation was quite grateful to have fresh produce to give to her recipients. As the director of a local community garden he realized that plenty of food went to waste at the end of the growing season. He set to work to create a Web site to connect gardeners with food pantries. An amazingly simple solution that is now providing benefits year after year throughout the country.
- Another hero is Oscar Aranda from Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. By day he takes eco-tourists on tours in his boat. By night he and his team of volunteers protect turtles from poachers. When turtles come ashore to lay their eggs, the team is there to watch over them. As soon as the mother returns to the sea, the team carefully digs up the nest and relocates the eggs to a secure area near a local hotel. This nightly ritual takes place every night between June and December. When the baby turtles hatch, hotel guests learn about turtle conservation and have the experience of watching them being released back to the sea. All told, Oscar and his team have rescued and released more than half a million baby turtles!
Actions You Can Take If you ever need a little inspiration or proof that a single person can make a huge difference in their local or global community, spend some time reviewing the stories of the CNN Heroes! Each one shows how ingenuity, perseverance, creativity, and some helping hands can make a difference in this world!
- What idea do you have for making a difference in your community?
- How might your contribution to this cause enhance your life and career?
- What skills might you learn that would further your career?
