Are You Putting Your Credibility at Risk?

Green Career Tip of the Week
"While natural variability continues to play a key role in extreme weather,
climate change has shifted the odds and changed the natural limits,
making certain types of extreme weather more frequent and more intense."
 --ClimateCommunications.org

It's always interesting to observe what news media catches my eye. This week it's been the coverage of extreme weather events and whether there's a link to climate change. This topic has shown up multiple times...in several ways...which has reminded me how important it is for us all to have a working understanding of the environmental issues and how they intersect with our work.

Today there's a big online video event that may be of interest to you if you want to become more aware of climate changes around the globe. Check out the article for more details.

Tip of the Week: Are You Putting Your Credibility at Risk?

Imagine you are in an interview, a conversation with an influential contact or a team meeting with your colleagues. The conversation suddenly shifts to the extreme weather that's hit the region lately and whether it's related to climate change.

You are asked a specific question that requires a specific answer....
  • Do you know how to respond?
  • Is your response based on your opinion? On the party line? Or on science?
  • What kind of impression will you leave as a result of your answer?
Will your response...
  • Win you the job?
  • Earn you the respect of your contact?
  • Build your credibility within your team?
It's for these reasons that I'm a firm believer that we must all have a broad science-based understanding of environmental issues and the tenets of sustainability.

Step Up Your Self-Education to Include Environmental Issues

You don't need to take a class or get a degree to expand what you know about climate change. The key is to familiarize yourself with the issues by reviewing the facts. Your goal isn't to know everything about all of factors, but rather to expand your own horizons. Even one new thought could shift how you approach your work and your life.

As you listen, think about the current situation from several angles.
  • How does this information impact your industry?
  • How your industry impacts the global climate situation?
  • What parameters are relevant in discussions within your industry?
The more you know, the more comfortable you will feel holding your own in networking conversations, interviews, and work exchanges with colleagues.

Grasp the Multi-faceted Impact of Climate Changes

A newly launched Climate Communication Science and Outreach Project just released a report entitled "Current Extreme Weather and Climate Change."  In the report, the team of climate scientists outlines the connections between extreme weather and climate disruption.
  • Heat waves
  • Reduced cold
  • Precipitation, floods, and drought
  • Floods
  • Drought
  • Circulation changes - think changes in the storm track
  • Hurricanes and summer storms
  • Winter storms
The text for each topic is easy-to-read, thoroughly referenced, and illustrated with clear examples and tables. A quick scan of this site, even 15-30 minutes, will definitely enhance what you know about this situation.

Climate Reality Project

Although you may be fairly familiar with the impact of climate disruption in your area and your country, you may not be familiar with how it's manifesting in every country around the world.

Want to find out what's happening on Planet Earth - to the land, the people, the food sources, and the animals (domestic and wild)? You have a unique opportunity to hear from people around the world about their perspective of how weather and the climate have impacted their regions.

Today, Wednesday, September 14 at 7 pm Central Time the Climate Reality Project is kicking off a global video event to highlight stories of people who live in all 24 time zones. The first presentation will be from Mexico in Spanish. Then when it's 7 pm Mountain Time, the speaker will be from Boulder, CO, and so on. You can see the entire line up here and request that a reminder be sent to you for each segment you want to listen to.

You can attend as many presentations as you'd like. Please note: language will vary as the event rolls around the world.
If you aren't going to be able to make it, here are a few more resources:
  • Read the Climate Reality Project blog to explore stories about what's happening throughout the world.
  • Use the map to take a tour of the world to discover the reality of what's happening right now.
  • Return to the site after the event and I suspect they'll have the presentations posted...no proof of that, but hopeful!
Getting a well-founded foundation on key environmental topics will allow you to layer on additional information as you learn more.
