When I talk with people searching for a green career I often notice they are focused on the end destination--the green job or a green business. With this strategy it's diffiult to experience success because it is such a long term goal. In this week's article, you'll discover how each each step you take is an integral part of your journey.

Tip of the Week: Your Green Career: A Journey, Not Just Destination
Rather than thinking of your green career as a single destination, think of each step you take as an integral part of your journey.
A Tempting Strategy
Although it may be tempting to target a green career that's “hot” or on a list of “growing” industries, I don't recommend that strategy for several reasons.
- Given the dynamic nature of the current green economy, there's no guarantee that a “hot” career will be available in your region or that it will stand the test of time.
- Furthermore, choosing a career from a list of top job titles or industries doesn't give you any assurance that the position is a good fit for your skills.
- Training for a “hot” industry without a plan for how you will translate your training into your career can be an expensive strategy.
Start with Your Big Picture Vision
A strategy that creates a stronger foundation is to begin with some thought about your big picture vision. If you could contribute to the state of the planet in some way, what would you do? Your passions, interests, and favorite skills are your best clues to your big picture vision. This new level of clarity positions you for your journey.
You experience a new level of motivation and excitement as you consider your future.
You are able to make more strategic short-term decisions about your career.
You have the opportunity to track how your target industry is evolving and growing. This allows you to develop your vision of your target career in alignment with how the industry is evolving.
Keep in mind: It's fairly rare for people to jump right into their ideal position. This fact is actually to your advantage!
Be Strategic
The key to moving forward with your green career is to choreograph your career journey as strategically as possible. Use this time to engage in opportunities that strengthen your resume:
- Identify a strategic volunteer opportunity - a project or committee that gives you the opportunity to take a leadership role, build a new skill, or learn about a topic that interests you
- Take courses or earn a certificate - a way to develop your knowledge about topics that prepare you for your target green career
- Green the job you have - a change in your work habits or a specific project that allows you to contribute to your company's efforts to make their business practices more sustainable
- Find a part-time job or contract project - an opportunity that demonstrates that you have relevant work experience
- Look for a stepping stone job - a position within that traditional (or slightly green) economy that allows you to strengthen skills you'll need in your future green career
As soon as you begin taking action to prepare for your green career, you are embarking on your green career journey. You'll discover that each action you take engages you and allows you to contribute in new ways to your community and the environment in general.
As you continue your journey, each new opportunity takes you closer to your big picture green career.
