Tip of the Week: 3 Signs Your Job Search is Sluggish

If you are searching for a job, you know without a doubt whether you've succeeded or not. You either have a job or you don't.  That marker of success is black and white. Without an offer in hand, you may well feel like you are failing in your mission.

Rather than seeing your job search as an all or nothing proposition, look at the building blocks that lead to a successful job search. By understanding which element of your job search is sluggish, you can focus your attention on revitalizing your job search to get the big results you crave...a job!

Take a moment to assess your current job search. Where do you stand on each of these items?

1.You aren't finding enough jobs to apply for
a.You aren't sure where to look for more openings.

b.You don't know who to talk to about possible openings.
Although the abundance of online job boards may make you think that is THE way to find jobs to apply to, you are far more likely to hear about your job from someone in your network.

2.You are feeling like you are standing outside your target industry, looking in.
a.You don't know people in your field of choice. If you are transitioning within your current industry or trying to make your way into a new industry, it's important to make connections with people who already work in your chosen industry. Without these connections you'll find it hard to find your way to key resources, contacts, opportunities, and job leads.

b.You don't know where to find people in your field. When you first begin exploring an industry it's easy to think you are all alone in your interests. The key to figuring out how to tap into your industry is to do online research first. Through your research you are bound to find an opening, a crack in the industry's armor that allows you to step inside to meet the people you want to target.
c.You aren't volunteering or contributing to your profession in any way. One of the very best ways to gain traction in your target industry is to become active in a professional association. Whether you volunteer in a local chapter or find a way to volunteer at a conference, you begin making connections and building your visibility.

3.You aren't getting called back for interviews.

a.It's possible no one is even seeing your resume. Recruiters and Human Resources are receiving 500 or more applications for any one job these days. A large company may be receiving up to 20,000 resumes a month! It's going to take more than a resume to get noticed these days.

b.You aren't qualified for the positions you are going after. In a difficult job market it's tempting to apply for any position you can find, whether you are a good fit for the job or not. Although this may feel better and satisfy your unemployment rules, applying to just any position isn't going to do much good.

c.You aren't standing out from the competition. If you apply to a position because you could maybe do the job, you aren't going to end up on the short list for interviews. Nothing about you, your story, or your experience is going to be compelling enough to trigger an interview invitation.

d.You have not zest or enthusiasm for your target position. If you have no real connection to the position, you aren't going to exude the kind of energy that employers look for. They don't want just anyone in the job. They want someone who is excited to be there!
The key to having a vibrant job search all of these pieces must work together. Where might you put more attention to bring your job search to a new level?
