Step 1: Discover What Fascinates You

Questions: How do you determine your target destination/career? How do you know what kind of seed/career you are growing?

Answer: You pay close attention to what fascinates you, intrigues you, excites you.

That's right. Your passions, interests, and fascinations are the keys to discovering your target career.

Although you may have a sense of what intrigues you, don't be alarmed if you are drawing a blank at this moment. This question is not about your list of interests at this point. It's about how you feel when you are drawn or attracted to something.

Start the flow by responding to these questions:

  • What excites you in the green world?
  • What conversations engage you?
  • What topics intrigue you?

Go with the first answer that comes to you. As you think of that thing or topic, notice how you feel inside.

  • Are you excited?
  • Do you feel a warmth, a pull, an attraction?
  • Do you breathe more deeply?
  • Do you relax?
  • Do you feel your mind engaging?
Keep playing with this exercise until you can feel how you respond when you are excited or intrigued by something. If you can describe the feeling, that's great…but if you can't, that's fine too. What you absolutely need to walk away with is the knowledge that something shifts when you are attracted to something.

To take this one step further, work with this "muscle" long enough that you recognize it whenever it kicks into gear.

We refer to this "muscle" as your HeartMagnet. When you are aware of its messages it shows you what you are drawn to in life. What you are drawn to gives you clues about your target destination.

The Flip Side of Your HeartMagnet

If you've ever played around with a magnet you know it attracts and repels depending on the circumstances.

When you understand how you respond when you are repelled by something, you are strengthening your HeartMagnet.

You might be repelled by a person, a situation, an environment, or a set of values. It's not important at this point to make a list of what you are repelled by. Instead focus on how it feels to be repelled by something. You may actually find it is easier to access these feelings than those we talked about earlier.

Why Is It Important to Know What Repels You?

Many of us buck up and just deal with the things that repel us. That's an expensive way to live. It takes energy, erodes our self-esteem, and masks our true passions and interests in life. When you feel repelled, pay attention! You may not be able to resolve the situation in that moment, but at least you are acknowledging your inner voice for giving you that critical piece of information.

When you know what repels you, you can make better decisions in the moment. For instance, if you feel repelled in a job interview, run, do not walk, to the nearest exit. If you have bad feeling as you are making an appointment for the interview…stop! If you feel this bad before you get the job, what are you going to feel like when you land the job. Miserable, that's how.

Using Your HeartMagnet

Practice using your HeartMagnet in your daily activities. Every time you have to make a decision, check in with your inner guidance system. Then when you are faced with a big life decision, you'll know how to reach inside for insights about how to move forward in a way that suits you.
